My address here at the small medic center and a simple message- 'Come alone'.
It wasn't a trap, it was for both our protections. If my operation was brought to light by a fight with the Pentecostal we would both be paying dearly for a pretty face.
I heard footsteps as the hair on my neck stood on end. It was one of the kyes... I turned to see one of the read heads... I think it was Jacob, they always confused me.
"He'll be on his way shortly, you all need to be ready."
"I still think it's a bad idea."
"She's not ours to keep Jacob."
"I'm Ryan."
"It doesn't matter, she's free to make own decisions. We are not like the monster we recused her from." Nor did we want anything to do with him.
"Do you know how powerful she is? We've had her for less than a week and her healing is beyond anything we have seen. Her wounds look weeks old, not days.
Yet you plan to deliver her to the Pentecostal."
"We are returning her to her loves ones, no matter their religion."
"She's a powerful weapon! And you're letting our enemies have her!"
"She's beyond our control Ryan. And our enemies have no clue of Remmi's existence as a Kye."
"No one is beyond our control."
"Artemis nor Remmi will ever be a weapon for us Ryan."
"Than why rescue her?"
"I owed her father for a life I was allowed to live and I am paying my debt by giving his daughter a life to live."
"I still think this is a mistake."
"It is not our choice. Now do whatever it is you two do to become whole... Before Bishop gets here."
"And if he isn't alone?"
"He will be."
"How are you so sure?"
"He loves the woman you call a weapon. He believes I'm his brother and he wouldn't risk her coming to more harm by bringing his church along."
"Sin?"
"He would not risk it Ryan. Now.. both of you whole and outside of her room."
"What if he reacts badly to it being you?"
"Your concern is uncanny." My tone was thick with sarcasm.
"She shouldn't be hidden."
"We are in position to say what she should or should not be. Perhaps Remmi prefers the silent life, we have no idea because it's not our place.
She's safe, we have done OUR part."
"Are you going to tell her?"
"No I will leave that choice to Bishop."
"Peter, I believe you are becoming more like your leader."
"Hold your tongue and obey your orders. Not a word when he arrives if you wish to exist." A bluff with no backing, but my tone covered for that. My demands echoes in the small office.
Ryan quickly left in a huff as I leaned back into my chair. I had a clear view of the only drive, we were further out of town than most. We were in a small medical building suited to assist with the outer communities that couldn't make to the big city.
An easy set up for the injured, very few around to ask questions and even fewer who spoke English.
Perfect for us to use as we needed and if my calculations were right... Bishop would be arriving any moment. And yes, I took speed into my consideration.
